An AC, 3 phase induction motor derives its name from the fact that the rotor current is induced by the magnetic field, instead of electrical connections. Three phase induction motors do not require any starting device so they are effectively a self-starting induction motor. An AC induction motor’s rotor can be either wound type or squirrel-cage type. Three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors are widely used in industrial drives because they are rugged, reliable, economical and require no starting device. As with the single phase induction motor, there is no brush wear, even at very high achievable speeds, so the reliability is good with low maintenance.
